Blas CantΓ³: 10 facts about Spainβs Eurovision 2021 singer
Blas CantΓ³ will represent Spain at Eurovision 2021 with his song βVoy a quedarmeβ.
Blas was originally due to sing βUniversoβ at Eurovision 2020. However, the contest was cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. But, just like several other countries, Spain opted to stick with its singer for Eurovision 2021. βVoy a quedarmeβ was chosen from two songs that were presented to the Spanish public in Destino EurovisiΓ³n. The other track was βMemoriaβ.
And now weβve compiled 10 facts you need to know about Blas CantΓ³. Letβs do this!
Spain at Eurovision 2021: Facts about Blas CantΓ³
1. Heβs a small-town boy
Blas CantΓ³ Moreno was born on 26 October 1991 in the small municipality of Ricote. Itβs located in the Murcia region, in the south-east of Spain. The village has a population of just over 1,500. Some scholars believe that it lent its name to the character of Ricote in Don Quixote β one of the most influential works in Spanish literature.
2. He attempted Junior Eurovision
Aged 12, Blas took part in EuroJunior β Spainβs multi-show selection for Junior Eurovision 2004. He competed with two songs βCantarΓ©β and βSentirβ, the latter of which qualified for the final. The selection was won, however, by MarΓa Isabel with βAntes muerta que sencillaβ. She went on to victory at Junior Eurovision too, becoming one of the contestβs most iconic winners. Mirela β a fan favourite to represent Spain on multiple occasions β was among the other notable EuroJunior 2004 participants.
3. He was in a boyband
From 2009 to 2016, Blas was a member of the chart-topping boyband Auryn. They were made up of five members, all of whom had previously appeared on various talent shows in Spain. They became popular through their YouTube covers of hits like Rihannaβs βUmbrellaβ and Los Secretosβ βDΓ©jameβ. The groupβs name was derived from the AURYN talisman which features in the The Neverending Story novel and films. The charm was supposed to grant one the opportunity to fulfil all oneβs wishes.
4. Heβs a chart-topping award winner
Blas enjoyed much success with Auryn. The group released four albums β three of which reached number one in Spain. They also had seven top ten singles. In 2013, they won βBest Spanish Actβ at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Auryn were also chosen to sing βCuando te volverΓ© a verβ (When Can I See You Again) for the Spanish version of the Disney animated film Wreck-It Ralph.
5. He tried out for Eurovision before
Auryn themselves have some Eurovision pedigree, taking part in Spainβs 2011 national selection. They reached the superfinal of the contest. Each act had to sing three original songs, with the jury picking one original song from each artist. Auryn sang βEvangelineβ, βEl sol brillarΓ‘β and βVolverβ. However, Auryn ultimately lost out to Lucia Perez and βQue me quiten lo bailaoβ.
6. He went solo in 2016
Auryn officially split in July 2016. Blas signed with Warner Music Spain soon after. He released his debut album Complicado in 2018. It reached number one and was reissued as Complicados a year later. The record spawned five singles. βΓl No Soy Yoβ is his biggest hit song. It has over 43 million Spotify streams and almost 75 million views on YouTube. It went on to achieve a PROMUSICAE (Spanish Music Producers) platinum certification.
7. He had a very tough year in 2020
The past year has been tough for us all. But Blas had it particularly hard, and weβre not just talking about Eurovision being cancelled. In the space of just a few months, he lost both his father and grandmother. His Eurovision 2021 song βVoy a quedarmeβ is directly inspired by them. βItβs a super special songβ, he told RTVE. βI wrote this one at the most difficult moment of my life. I wrote it at the time my father was passing away. Then I recorded it when my grandmother was dying from COVID and it was a very hard moment. In fact, the emotion is noticeable in the voice, I think. It is a song that gives off sensitivity and a lot of strength at the end. What happens is that you always put the beginning, which is how slower and so on, but then it grows in a brutal wayβ.
8. Heβs a film star
There is apparently no end to Blasβ talents. Because heβs also dabbled in acting. He is the voice of the wickedly handsome Lou in the Spanish dub of the animated film Ugly Dolls. The villanous role was played by Nick Jonas in the Hollywood original.
9. Heβs collaborated with some big divas
Throughout his career, Blas CantΓ³ has worked with some of the biggest female names in music β both in Spain and beyond. While still with AURYN, he and his bandmates collaborated with US singer Anastacia on βWhoβs Loving You?β. More recently, Blas has released singles with Spainβs Eurovision 2012 star Pastora Soler and the original American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson. In January of this year, he released βCΓΊrameβ with NIA, the reigning OperaciΓ³n Triunfo champion.
10. He loves his dogs
Blas is a huge dog lover and owns two Pomeranians β Leo and Tirma. The adorable pair even have a joint Instagram account of their own. @leo_y_tirma has over 3,000 followers.

Eurovision 2020 β Blas CantΓ³ (Spain) / ΠΠ»Π°Ρ ΠΠ°Π½ΡΠΎ (ΠΡΠΏΠ°Π½ΠΈΡ)
Blas CantΓ³ Moreno was born in Ricote, Murcia on October 26, 1991 and spent his childhood in Molina de Segura. Blas CantΓ³ is singing from a very young age and when he was four he began taking piano and trumpet lessons at the music school. However, he soon realized that his passion is to sing and guided his career to this path. At the age of 8 he won the contest of Teresa Rabal Veo Veo Awards in the region of Murcia. Two years later he returned to compete in the Awards and won first place in the regional final and third place in the Spanish competition.
His dream of participating in the Eurovision Festival dates back to his teens. In 2004 he was a finalist for Eurojunior, a TVE program to select the Spanish representative in Eurovision Junior, finishing 4th with «Sentir». Years later, already in Madrid and in search of new horizons, he tried his luck in the Destino Oslo 2010 online preselection. Next the possibility arises with being part of boys band Auryn (together with Γlvaro Gango, Carlos Marco, David Lafuente and Dani FernΓ‘ndez), who tried to go to Eurovision in 2011 but finished 2nd. With the band he has released four albums on the market: «Endless Road, 7058» (2011), «Anti-Heroes» (2013, Platinum), «Circus Avenue» (2014, Platinum), «Ghost Town» (2015, Platinum), which have sold in 140,000 copies, and made band Best Spanish Artist at the MTV Europe Music Awards and also LOS40 Music Awards nominees.
In 2016, starting solo career Blas CantΓ³ becomes the winner of the fifth edition of Tu Cara Me Suena (Your Face Sounds Familiar), another format produced by Gestmusic aired at Antena 3. During the show he has performed Como yo te amo (Raphael), Greased Lightning (John Travolta), Can’t Stop the Feeling! (Justin Timberlake), Sola (Diana Navarro), Stay With Me (Sam Smith), Livin’ la vida loca (Ricky Martin), QuΓ© voy a hacer con mi amor (Alejandro FernΓ‘ndez), Believe (Cher), Feeling Good (Michael BublΓ©), S.O.S (Falete), La BohΓ¨me (Charles Aznavour), Purple Rain (Prince), Ave MarΓa (Andrea Bocelli), Somebody to Love (Freddie Mercury), Libre (Nino Bravo), Left Outside Alone (Anastacia), Quisiera yo saber (Melendi), ΒΏY cΓ³mo es Γ©l? (Marc Anthony).
After signing to Warner Music Spain, he has released debut single «In Your Bed», followed by «Drunk and Irresponsible». In 2018 song «Γl no soy yo» written by singer-songwriter Leroy SΓ‘nchez became a gold and platinum record, with more than 51 million views on the official video clip on YouTube, and number 1 spot on the Top 40 list. On September 14, 2018, Blas CantΓ³ has released his debut album «Complicado», where he shows his true personality and in which he premiered as a songwriter. In just a week of it’s release, album reached number 1 spot in charts.
On 19 October 2019, Blas CantΓ³ made appearance at a special Breast Cancer Charitable concert Cadena 100 Por Ellas performing one of his latest hits β»El no soy yo». Concert took place in Madrid’s WiZink Center with many Spanish and international acts appearing on the stage: Soraya (Spain 2009), NEK, James Blunt, Melendi, etc. Prior to the Eurovision, singer also had to complete his Complicados tour, which has taken him throughout the width and length of the Spanish geography. Pamplona, ββBarcelona and Madrid were the last three shows in December that took place before focusing completely on the Song Contest.
Blas CantΓ³ counts on the support of the Spanish fans, who every year name him among the favorites to represent Spain at the festival. In La ElecciΓ³n Interna 2020 of Eurovision-Spain, the annual vote in which the Eurofans decide their ideal Eurovision representative, CantΓ³ finished 4th with No volverΓ© (A seguir tus pasos), after being 3rd in 2019. The 2020 vote was won by Ruth Lorenzo for the third time and the second year in a row, top 3 also included RosalΓa and Lola Γndigo. Blas was also the favorite of the international jury formed by 22 professionals from the music or television industry or Eurovision experts, which included ESCKAZ’s editor-in-chief Andy Mikheev.
«Eurovision is a festival that I myself and all my family have always followed, I am very happy to be part of it now,» said the singer during his official presentation at the newscast of Spanish Television. Very excited and grateful for the selection, Blas explained that he composes throughout the year and has many written songs, although he considers it essential to approach song selection calmly and very carefully : «It is a very important decision, we want the perfect song for Eurovision «, adding that it is clear that it will be authentic, will follow own style and will have the collaboration with some of the most prominent authors and producers in the music industry. Blas admitted that he is nervous for all the months that remain ahead of him in which he has to make the best decisions and face the pressure. However, he ensures that when he steps on stage those nerves would disappear. At the end of his interview, Blas has sent a clear message: «I feel very fortunate, responsible and with the intention that everyone is united by Eurovision.»
Latest news
Blas CantΓ³ has chosen the set of Operacion Triunfo to present live his song for Rotterdam, because, he says, «with Gestmusic and TVE I feel as a family after 20 years working together». A beautiful staging has wrapped up his performance, with transported us to Mars or Moon, those landscapes that appear in the music video of «Universo». This scenography has been created especially for the premiere and Blas CantΓ³ has pointed out that it does not correspond to the one he will perform in Rotterdam. The 12 dancers of the program have accompanied the artist, staging that «army of shadows» of the past that do not let him move towards the new destination he has decided to take. For the performance they have used the same costumes as the extras of the official video.
Entry of Blas CantΓ³ «Universo» has been presented by RTVE. The song was written by Blas together with Dan Hammond, Dangelo Ortega, Maciej Mikolaj Trybulec and Ash Hicklin. Ash Hicklin has worked with such Eurovision acts as Tom Dice (Belgium 2010) and Waylon (Netherlands 2014,2018). Trybulec has collaborated with Lake Malawi for 2019.
«I wrote this song at a time in my life in which, probably, in an act of cowardice, I didn’t raise my voice. I didn’t say what I felt thinking that it would be so much easier. And I was wrong. I closed my eyes and, with all my strength, I apologized to the Universe.» The artist defines the song as honest and very personal one with which the singer metaphorically represents a reconciliation with his «inner self» to learn to love himself more and grow personally. Framed in the synthpop genre, «Universo» is a new style for the Spanish candidate but retains his essence with a great emotional charge. «Universo» is designed to showcase the performer’s abilities emphasizing his vocal quality, his treble and his falsetto.
«It’s a very complete song: mysterious at the beginning, with a chorus full of energy and final explosion. It’s great, like the univers and when I sing I feel free,» acknowledges the Murcian, who opted for this song between 50 other options. The choir is another of the highlights of the song that singer wants to empower on stage. According to him, he already has some ideas for the staging and already contemplates some names for the artistic direction of «Universo». «I think the scenery has to capture the immensity of the theme on stage. I would like to surprise and not fall into the obvious, with a staging that expresses the lyrics and the emotions,» he explains. For him, feelings must take precedence over scenic artifice, but he does not rule out using new technologies on the stage. Blas also does not want to give details about his look, but says he will not leave anyone indifferent.
The music video of «Universo» faithfully represents the concept of the song and makes its message understandable through the images. «Universo» is dynamic, choreographic, attractive and modern video, filmed between Lanzarote and Tenerife and directed by Cristian Velasco. A conceptual production that begins in a dark and cold environment, where the fog envelops the singer. Gradually, Blas comes through an inhospitable and bleak landscape, aimlessly but overcoming his fears. This landscape transports us to the Moon and we can see the performer freeing himself from his past to find the light and be happy. The artist makes a retrospective review with which he apologizes to his destiny and thus find the determination he forgot in the past. «Working with Blas is super easy, not only because it is very photogenic but also because of its attitude towards the camera. It also gets 100% involved and makes work easy for all colleagues,» says the director.
The Spanish Eurovision entry was chosen among 50 other proposals created specifically to be performed by Blas CantΓ³ on the stage of Rotterdam 2020. Blas made clear that he wanted the title to be understandable in several languages ββand the word ‘universe’ has always been very present in his life. «For me it is the one that sustains me, the one that conspires so that my dreams come true. I have always thanked it».
On his Eurovision entry, singer from Murcia has worked with several national and international authors, such as Dan Hammond, producer and musician who has collaborated with artists such as Carlos Sadness, The Noises, Sin Rumbo. «The song came up on a trip we made to Edinburgh. It was Dan Hammond who proposed to go to Scotland where we worked with other composers who already have experience in Eurovision,» said Blas. «Universo» is a mid-tempo song, with an epic ending and which, although it is a new style for the singer, retains his essence. «It will be able to demonstrate his full potential,» said ToΓ±i Prieto (Entertainment Director of TVE), who also highlighted the strength of the chorus.
The singer notes that he would like to record the single in several languages ββso that his message reaches all of Europe, such as English and French and he does not rule out singing it also in the other official languages ββof Spain. Blas looks forward to this professional adventure that «will be one of the most important» of his career and he has thanked the messages of support and love he has received from his followers and fellow professionals, such as Pastora Soler, Ruth Lorenzo, Edurne and Danny Leiva.
RTVE.es will release on January 30 the song and video clip of ‘Universo’, the song of Blas CantΓ³ for the Eurovision 2020. The Spanish entry can be viewed exclusively on the official website from 10 am CET. On January 31, ‘Universo’ will become available on the artist’s YouTube Channel and other digital platforms.
05/10: Blas Canto to represent Spain
Preselection
On 5 October, Spanish broadcaster RTVE has announced that Blas CantΓ³ will represent Spain in Eurovision 2020. The announcement of the candidate was made in the Telediario, presented by Luis Guilera.
The entertainment director of TVE ToΓ±i Prieto revealed that there was a shortlist of six preferred candidates, and Blas was chosen «because he is a young, versatile boy with a good voice and can sing a song of a style that fits. He is a 360 artist». Prieto explains that due to the timing, it was impossible this year to get the candidate from the Operacion Triunfo. On 18 Septmber, RTVE has confirmed that the upcoming season of OperaciΓ³n Triunfo will not be used to select the Spanish entrant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, instead it will be internally selecting a «well-known» singer to represent Spain. It is believed that names of Cristina Ramos, Ruth Lorenzo, Lola Γndigo and Diana Navarro were also discussed. Throughout the decade, RTVE was internally selecting Eurovision artist three times: Pastora Soler in 2012, El SueΓ±o de Morfeo in 2013 and Edurne in 2015, although in the first two cases the public was able to select their song.
On October 8, Blas has also reached his audience in Instagram and Twitter, asking to send their thought on what his Eurovision entry should take about. In an interview for Europa Press, the singer stated that the song will be in the middle between the ballad and the festive music. «I don’t want a ballad but I also don’t go to a party». He would like to be accompanied on stage, but it will depend on the song eventually chosen. «It has to be very beautiful in image, the staging has to fly with the song» On the language, Blas is very sincere: «It’s tempting (to sing in English) as Europe can understand me, but music is universal, and with the Internet people know languages, Spanish is circulating through the world with the Latin movement. I don’t feel pressure to do this choice, but I want the song to be in my language. It is important to know how to connect with the public and for this you have to be honest, with a song that represents me». CantΓ³ clarified that RTVE has not imposed any condition regarding the song choice.
Speaking with Formula TV on 28 November, the Head of the Spanish Delegation in the Eurovision Ana MarΓa Bordas explains it is better to choose the singer first, and then work on the contest entry. «Our concern with Eurovision is always to have enough time and having chosen Blas directly, allows us to take our time with preparations. He is a great professional as a representative. We are working on different songs and with different composers; we don’t close to any style, but preference is to have a song in Spanish language. It is very important that the artist identifies with his song in Eurovision», she says adding she hopes to have the song finalized in early January.
Reveal of the Spanish entry is expected to take place during one of the shows of OperaciΓ³n Triunfo, which kicked off on January 12.
