Dark Forest
A dark forest biome. A woodland mansion can also be seen.
A dark forest is a temperate forested biome. It is known for its thick, dense leaf canopies that block light sufficiently to allow hostile mobs to spawn during the daytime. It has two variants: the normal dark forest, and dark forest hills.
Contents
Description [ ]
Dark forests feature a much higher density in trees compared to other forest biomes, which often times block direct views of the sky entirely. Oak, dark oak, and (sometimes) birch trees generate in these biomes; the only place where dark oak trees naturally generate. Additionally, both types of huge mushrooms generate among the trees, though the red variants are more common. Like normal forests, lily of the valley, rose bushes, peonies and lilacs generate in this biome family along with the usual dandelions and poppies. Grass and leaves take on a dark but vibrant green color.
Lava lakes that generate in dark forests can cause locally destructive forest fires, due to the extreme density of flammable wood and leaves; the same goes for lightning strikes that hit the trees during thunderstorms, though the fires caused by the strikes are usually quickly put out by the rain.
Unique to dark forests are woodland mansions, enormous dungeon-like structures that rarely generate within the trees. Woodland mansions are home to the dangerous illager mobs and are one of the only places where said mobs spawn. Mansions contain various rooms and valuable loot for the player to plunder.
Although players are unlikely to run out of wood in dark forests, survival can still be more difficult compared to other forest biomes. The dense leaf canopy can diffuse skylight sufficiently for hostile mobs to spawn during the day in some spots. Additionally, hostile mobs can spawn atop huge mushrooms and suddenly fall near to the player. Woodland mansions are dangerous to explore without adequate preparation, due to their large size and the difficult Illager and other hostile mobs inside. The high density of trees can easily lead to players getting lost unless trails are marked using torches or other distinct markers. Using flint and steel in these biomes can help to clear out some trees due to their flammability.
In a given world, dark forests often have small patches of plains biomes cutting up through it, forming glades. Dark forests are usually found next to other various lush biomes.
Variants [ ]
There are two different dark forest variant biomes.
Dark forest [ ]
Dark forest is the most common dark forest variant. The terrain can range from fairly even to hilly, with occasional lakes. This biome has a dense canopy of leaves that reduces the light sufficiently for hostile mobs to inhabit the forest during the daytime. Small patches of plains biomes can generate clearings within the forest. Woodland mansions also can generate here.

Nether Fortress
A nether fortress, or simply fortress, is a large complex of bridges, corridors, and towers found in the Nether.

Generation [ ]

Nether fortresses generate in all Nether biomes. To do so, the game splits the Nether into regions in which one of either a fortress or a bastion remnant can generate. The regions are 432×432 blocks in Java Edition and 480×480 blocks in Bedrock Edition. Each region has a 4 chunk separation located on the south and east borders of the region in which neither a fortress nor a bastion can generate. This leaves only a 368×368 block section in Java Edition or 416×416 block section in Bedrock Edition where a structure can generate. Two structures never generate in the same region, although they might overlap if they generate close to the separation border. In Java Edition, the chance of a fortress generating instead of a bastion is 2 ⁄5 (40%), while in Bedrock Edition the chance of a fortress generating instead of a bastion is 1 ⁄3 (33.3%).
Nether fortresses can generate buried in netherrack. In such a case, the interior is not filled with netherrack; all hallways and passages are clear except for open walkways and bridges. It is possible but rare for glowstone, crimson trees, and warped trees to generate inside the fortress pathways.
Structure [ ]
Segments of a nether fortress that are fully enclosed.
The general pattern of the walkways.
A lava well found inside a nether fortress.
Nether fortresses are large complexes, composed of nether bricks materials, that are supported by massive pillars that tower high above the lava oceans. The fortress generation starts with a plain four-way crossing centered at chunk coordinates 11,
, 11 of the designated chunk. A fortress has two areas, an exterior area of open bridges and an interior area of enclosed corridors. Both the bridges and corridors can end in a «broken» structure or may simply end without elaboration. Fortresses can tunnel through netherrack, giving the «exterior» areas an appearance of tunnels with nether brick floor and netherrack walls and ceilings. At broken sections the terrain is not cleared, which may create a tunnel that leads straight into a wall of netherrack.
The exterior consists of:
Stairs in a nether fortress, with nether wart growing next to them.
The interior of the structures have 1×2 windows with nether brick fences as the windowpanes. The fences also form gate-like structures at the entrances of some rooms and corridors. Rooms include:
Blocks [ ]
A blaze spawner generated in the nether fortress.
Fortresses use a list of possible mobs to spawn that is separate from the rest of the Nether, regardless of the biome the fortress generates in. This includes zombified piglins, skeletons and magma cubes, as well as two exclusive mobs not found anywhere else: blazes and wither skeletons.
In Java Edition, the spawning algorithm has two checks:
If either check passes, it uses the special mob list for fortresses rather than the list for the biome when choosing the mob to spawn. The actual mob spawning proceeds as normal for the mob chosen from this list.
In Bedrock Edition, instead of spawning anywhere within a structural bounding box, mobs spawn only on the northwest corner of various blocks scattered few and far between throughout the fortress. In order to identify these spawning spots, glass panes must be placed all over the fortress at the second block up from the ground.
Mob | Spawn chance | Group size |
---|---|---|
Hostile category | ||
Blaze | 10 ⁄28 | 2–3 |
Zombified Piglin | 5 ⁄28 | 4 |
Wither Skeleton | 8 ⁄28 | 5 |
Skeleton | 2 ⁄28 | 5 |
Magma Cube | 3 ⁄28 | 4 |
Mobs spawn at a much higher rate if the fortress is surrounded by soul sand valley or warped forest biomes, as hostile mobs in these biomes (ghasts, skeletons, endermen) spawn much less frequently, allowing most hostile mobs to spawn in the fortress.

Fortresses generate nether fortress loot with chests in the indoor sections placed at some corridor turns.
In Java Edition, each nether fortress chest contains 2–4 item stacks, with the following distribution:
