Description:
It’s an adventure map I’ve made specifically for Sean (Forge Labs, YouTube channel), to explore the world, survive in the world for 100 days with this parasite plague, and loot some things along the way to prepare for the final fight and solve the secrets of the Lab itself π It has 2 farms, 1 old manor, 2 campsites in the forest, a church with a graveyard, some other random structures with signs, and a Soviet scientific research laboratory, also in the forest.
Process:
I decided for the map to be made in Russian style (I tried it in my most recent projects and it went pretty well, with that Moscow map :D), for most people Soviet Russia associates with apocalypse, some secret spy things, cold gray concrete buildings, and so on, it was perfect for the Sean’s idea of making a video about a parasite apocalypse.
Now, after I decided which style I should pick, I started thinking about how the user will interact with the map, though we know with Minecraft you can directly interact with the map, but Sean’s request was not just to survive in some Minecraft world, but in an apocalypse. So I thought about how this interaction can be made through buildings’ locations on the map. First off I started from a farmhouse which can clearly be seen from spawn, so, obviously, this will be the first house you’ll go to, and it’s exactly what happened in the video. In short, with my space design abilities I tried to predict how the player will move around the map, which place he’ll visit first, what feelings he’ll get there, and so on.
All of these things were considered very carefully in order to get the best user experience and interaction with the space, the world.
The laboratory is located in the forest, kinda far from anything else, so it would take time for the player to find it. In terms of style, I picked Soviet architecture from 1960s and 1970s, especially the entrance of the lab was made in that style. This type of architecture naturally creates mystery to it, some darkness and power, which is exactly what’s needed for a laboratory :D. Another thing needs to be mentioned, I’ve never designed a laboratory in my life hahah, so I had to go through a lot, a lot of pictures and plans of various laboratories of various sorts :D, to design my own. However, I believe I did it pretty damn well, despite my lack of knowledge in this subject.
For the manor, I used an actual building in Russia, which is considered historic, though now it’s abandoned and no one knows what’s inside of it, so I had to create the interiors and room positions on my own.
In my opinion, the map and the project itself turned out to be great, it’s my first time doing something like that.
