Genetic Animals

Genetic Animals is a mod for 1.16.4+ Minecraft Forge that is still in beta. Genetic Animals is a realism mod that replaces cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, llamas, rabbits, and mooshrooms with a more dynamic genetically driven entity. All animals included in the mod have their own unique genes that can be inherited by offspring allowing the player to selectively breed for colors, size, shape, and loot. Animals also have several other realism changes such as grazing and eating food, a hunger mechanic, sleeping, a healing mechanic, genders, pregnancy and/or egg fertility. If using creative mode or commands, you can use Genetic Animals spawn eggs to summon the mod animals.

Getting Started

To get started with genetic animals you will need to find an adult male and female (or just any 2 if omnigender is enabled in the config) animal of the same species and breed them using their breeding food item. If the animal is a mammal they will fall pregnant rather than instantly spawning a baby, if they are a chicken they will lay a fertilized egg which can be thrown to hatch it. Once the animal is born it will grow slowly over time rather than instantly, this can be sped up by feeding them their breeding item.

Villages will have a few pure breeds per village, explore the world to find more breeds. Animals found in the wild will tend to have traits adapted for their environment or traits that are just endemic to the biome. In an upcoming release animals found in the wild will be much likely to be fearful of or aggressive to players, while village animals will remain docile. The Wandering Trader will also start selling more docile and unique animals.

Find animals you like in villages and in the wild and keep the best ones for breeding the next generation, if you use your favorites for breeding they will produce offspring that share their traits and occasionally you will get new animals born that have your favorite traits from multiple ancestors.

Many of the animal equipment items are RGB dyeable like the vanilla leather armor and horse armor. Most are only obtainable from villager trades except for basic collars and bridles. All animals in the mod can wear collars.

Animals

Unlike vanilla animals Genetic Animals Graze for food, have pregnancies, and slowly change shape and size as they grow. Each animal still has the same breeding items but can also eat a myriad of suitable foods to fill their hunger bar. Genetic Animals will also sleep at night and they will seek shelter from the rain and midday sun. While sleeping or resting Genetic Animals will lose hunger more slowly while restoring their health. Genetic Animals all have their own GUI where you can crouch + right click to view their name, age, parent names (if parents were named before breeding), gender, hunger, health and pregnancy status, taming level will also be displayed in an upcoming version.

Cows breed with wheat and hay bales, but they will also happily eat melon, pumpkin, grasses, vines, oak leaves, carrots, apples, sugar, wheat, and hay. They have one calf at a time and make up to five buckets of milk after birth. Cows have an incalculable number of heritable horn variations, some are quite interesting. Cows can be used for riding and as a pack animal.

Sheep:

Pigs breed with carrots, beetroot, or potato. When bred they have 1 to 15 piglets. Pigs are a neutral mob that will attack back if provoked. They can be equipped with saddles and chests but can not be equipped with bridles to steer them with so must be directed with a carrot on a stick. Pigs take 2.5 days to grow from a newborn piglet to an adult but will continue growing for five days.

Chickens:

Chickens use any sort of seed to trigger breeding. Once bred (only female if omnigenders is set to false) chickens lay fertile eggs for a few days that may be hatched by throwing. Throwing eggs to hatch chickens will eventually be replaced by needing the eggs to be incubated by the player or a chicken. Chickens will eat any seeds, sweet berries, dandelions, melon slices, tall grass, grass, bread, eggs, and spider eyes.

Rabbits:

Rabbits breed using a carrot or dandelion. A litter of rabbits can be anywhere from just one to as many as thirteen. Rabbits can be fed grass, tall grass, carrots, sweet berries, dandelions, and rose bushes. Some rabbits can grow a fleece and will appear much more fluffy than most rabbits. A rabbit with an enormous fleece will drop one white wool each time its sheared. The more fluffy the rabbit the more likely you are to get wool.

Llamas:

Llamas must be tamed and fed a hay bale each to trigger breeding. Llamas will only have one cria at a time, their pregnancies last two minecraft days and the cria takes five days to mature. Llamas can be used as a pack animal but can also be used for riding. Some llamas will be fluffier and can be sheared for wool, it can take a few days for a llama to grow back their wool once sheared but they will have an interesting haircut while they grow their fleece. In addition to their breeding items llamas can be fed grass, tall grass, carrots, wheat, apples, or sugar as a treat.

Farming animals is central to the Genetic Animals mod even though it is not required to find new and unique animals. Farming is done to produce items like meat, leather, eggs, wool, milk, hides, or rabbits foot. With Genetic Animals installed you can also farm to improve the animals to produce more of these products or products that they would not usually make like leather sheep or wool rabbits.

The Basics

To get started you will need to find two matching animals of the same species, if you have omnigender set to false you will need to find a male and female pair. To see if they are male or female check their GUI by shift+right clicking on the animal and look at the symbols on the top right. The first symbol you see going left to right will be either a venus symbol for females or a mars symbol for males. While you have their GUI open check what it says the animal is in the top left. If it says they are a newborn, baby, or young animal you will have to wait until they are mature (or if you have feed growth set to true, feed them their breeding item until they are an adult) to be able to breed them. Animals will also need to be fed well, check that their food icon is filled to the top to get good results from breeding. Once you have your pair of compatible and ready animals use their breeding item to bring them close together and right click once on each of them with the breeding item to feed it to them. If it was successful they should both emit hearts and bump face. If you are breeding chickens they will lay eggs accompanied by an experience point, throw the egg to hatch it. If the animals you are breeding do not lay eggs one of them (the female if omnigenders is set to false) will fall pregnant after a few moments.

Your animals will do their best work if kept on grass blocks and fed well. Animals who do not get enough food may stop growing wool, stop laying eggs, stop making milk, and could even loose their pregnancies.

Automated Chicken Hatcher

Build a grass bottomed pen for your chickens on high ground with a second pen next to it 4 blocks lower. Under the top layer of your first pen place a continuous rail track that covers the whole area of the pen and uses powered rails to keep the cart in motion. At the edge of the lower pen place a dispenser that points into the lower pen, behind it place a hopper that points into the dispenser and is under a rail. Under the dispenser you will need to make a circuit clock to turn the dispenser on and off to shoot the eggs into the pen. Place a hopper minecart onto the rail and push it so it starts moving on the track, you will need to make sure it can move across the whole track on its own without assistance continuously. After that you should place blocks around the track so it is not disturbed by any wandering entities. If you set up your track correctly you should be able to drop any item in the top pen and have it picked up by the minecart and shot out by the dispenser into the lower pen. Finally place the two chickens you want to breed and hatch from in the upper pen and feed seeds to each to breed them, after that you will only need to breed them once every few game days and the lower pen will fill up with their offspring.

Swapping out the parents with their best children is a great low effort way to selectively breed chickens.

Breeding For Woolier Livestock

If you want to easily obtain the wooliest animals check villages and the wandering trader for their wooly animals. Otherwise if you want to develop them on your own follow the guide below.

To breed for wooly animals you need to first find at least one or more wooly animals. Once you have your wooliest pair breed them together and wait for the baby to mature and grow out a full fleece, this could take a few minecraft days. Once the babies have grown compare to their parents. What you are looking for is animals who’s bodies are more full and blocky. If you look closely you can see that their legs, head and tail may be more covered by the wool on their body. The wooliest animals will also shrink the most noticeably when sheared. Also keep in mind larger animals generally make more wool than tiny ones so both kinds of size can be beneficial to you. Any offspring that are an improvement over their parents you should keep for breeding new wooly animals and any that are equal to or less than their parents you can remove from your pens. You do not want to get rid of the original parents as they could still harbor beneficial genes that were not passed on by chance.

Once you have your improved wooly animals you will want to start breeding them together to see if they can also produce offspring that are even woolier. Repeat this process of keeping the wooliest to make the next generation until you are no longer getting improvements in the next generations. If you are no longer getting improvements and feel they are not yet as wooly as they can be you will want to start looking for new wooly animals to add to your breeding pens. They do not have to be as wooly as your current animals but they must make at least some wool. Breed these to your best animals and compare their offspring to each other not the parents. Breed the best of that generation together to produce a lot of offspring looking for wooly animals that are as good as or better than their wooliest grandparent. Repeat this process of selecting the best children and adding new animals when improvements slow until you feel you have maximized the wool.

My baby animal disappeared at birth:

If your baby animals vanishes as soon as it is born, or you find an experience point but no baby, this means that the breeding worked but it inherited a lethal gene from both parents and died at birth. If your baby animal passed from a lethal gene this means any offspring from those parents have a 25% chance of inheriting lethal genes and dying at birth. Of the remaining babies two out of three will likely have the heterozygous form. The most common lethal gene is having short legs but others exist as well.

I bred the wrong animals together:

If you bred the wrong two animals together you can change the parents of the baby by quickly rebreeding the pregnant parent to the correct father. If you have omnigenders set to true the father is likely to fall pregnant as well rather than over-ridding the original pregnancy in which case you will have to breed them twice. If you have an unintended pregnancy there is no way to stop the pregnancy only change the father if you act early. If you bred the wrong chickens you have until the egg is laid to change the father.

I bred two animals but no one is pregnant:

Pregnancies take time to show, you may have to wait up to two minutes for the pregnancy to become visible on their GUI. You can check pregnancy by shift+right clicking on an animal and hovering the mouse over their gender (venus or mars) symbols. As a pregnancy progresses their gender symbol will fill in with white starting at the bottom and moving up. Pregnancy status visible on the GUI can not change while the user is viewing it.

Genetic Animals Mod: Mod for improved realism and breeding in 1.14

Every animal in the mod has lots and lots of genes! the genes determine the animal’s shape, colour, patterning, their size, how much weight they can carry, what colour eggs they lay, how much meat, wool, leather, or milk they make. When you breed two animals together their babies get half of the genes of one parent and half from the other, so as long as they are the same species they can breed, and their offspring will look a little like both parents.

Animals also graze on grass starting with tall grass and working their way down to dirt, This is how they grow wool, make eggs, produce milk, maintain pregnancies, and grow from a child to an adult. But you can hand feed them or feed them Unbound Hay Blocks if you’d rather them not eat the grass.

Cows, Mooshroom, and Sheep make milk but they will not produce until after they have had a baby. Most animals have a 1 or 2 day pregnancy and once the pregnancy is half done the Cow, Mooshroom or Sheep will develop udders. Then once the baby is born the animal will have a full udder, for Sheep this is one bucket and for Cows this is between five and one buckets of milk, They can replenish this amount in one minecraft day if well fed. Lambs and Calves will consume some of the milk over time to grow, in the future this will be how young babies are fed exclusively. If the Cow or Sheep goes unmilked by you or a baby for too long they will eventually stop making milk. Mooshrooms make their soup out of milk, you can get between two and ten bowls of mushroom soup per day if well fed and collecting the mushroom soup will help keep them in milk.

We will also be adding Horses, Donkeys, Mules/Hinnies, Cats, Dogs, Foxes a nd Bees. Before then we are finishing some new stuff to make it easier to make lots of model shapes, more intricate types of texture layering, and working out the kinks in our AI.

Now to have a look at the animals currently in the mod!

Assorted Wild chickens! Plains Chickens come in classic white usually but I snagged these from a near by biome. They love all seeds (which is still how you breed them) but they will also eat berries, grass, wheat, dandelions, bread, and tasty spider’s eye. Chickens unlike the other animals only hatch from eggs. Baby chicks will grow up after two and a half days if fed well.

This is a flock of wild sheep gathered up from the plains, as you can see sheep can be polled(no horns), horned, or even have multiple horns. They can also be dyed like normal sheep but black sheep only become tinted colors and so only drop black wool even when dyed. Sheep make up to a whole bucket of milk per day, which is useful for when you need to feed orphan animals including kittens, puppies and foxes. Sheep love to eat hay and wheat, but also like grass, vines, pumpkin, melon, carrots, roses, dandelions, apples, and sugar. After two days of pregnancy Sheep usually have one to three lambs at a time which drink the milk the sheep makes. Lambs will grow up after three days if they are fed well.

These are some rabbits enjoying some hay which helps to keep the grass green, As you can see in this picture there are dwarf rabbits, lionhead rabbits, and lots of colours of which you are only seeing a few. The angora rabbit can be sheared for white wool if it has enough food to eat and smaller rabbits make less meat. Rabbits love to eat dandelions and carrots but also like grass, roses and berries. Rabbits take just one day to gestate and they can have from one to twelve kits depending on the mother’s size! Kits take two days to grow into adults like their parents.

This is a pair of wild pigs, pigs unlike the other livestock animals pigs are neutral and will attack you if you attack first, half of all pigs have tusks which will give them higher attack so be careful. They also are much rougher on the pasture than your other animals and will turn up the dirt looking for food, its very messy but makes for great farmland. Pigs love carrots, beetroot and potato but they also like cooked meats and fish, grass, melon, pumpkin, hay, wheat, apples, brown mushrooms, oak and dark oak saplings, bread, and whole buckets of milk, they will even eat rotten flesh. Pigs take just two days to have piglets and they can give birth to as many as 14! Piglets will become adults after two and a half days.

Llamas come in lots of colours, sizes, and even have different face shapes! Some llamas even have long wool that can be sheared. Lamas can be bred for better stats in attacking and carrying items, llamas benefit from hybrid vigor in the case of stats. To equip llamas with chests and breed them you have to tame them first, in the future this system will be a bit different. Llamas love hay only, but they also eat wheat, carrots, sugarcane, beetroot, and grass. Lamas are pregnant for two days and take five whole days to grow to an adult if well fed.

Mooshrooms are exactly like cows only they are infected by either red or brown mushrooms! Mooshrooms also have the ability to graze on mycelium and mushrooms. When struck by lightning mooshrooms can change from red to brown and from brown to red. Brown mooshrooms can be milked for suspicious stew if they have been fed flowers and otherwise make mushroom soup like the red mooshrooms. Mooshrooms can make 2 bowls of soup or stew for every bucket of milk they can make.

Using the random genes in the wild you can selectively breed your animals for characteristics you like and to create real life breeds, here are some examples of chicken breeds created in the mod:

We’ve added two items to help with preventing your animals from eating up all the grass and making things look terrible. Unbound Hay, and Sparse Grass.

Unbound Hay is created when you right click on a Hay Block with a sharp tool, eat can be eaten from 9 times before it disappears, If you harvest it it drops however many pieces of wheat are left in the block. Its also effected by gravity so you can stack your hay for longer feeding times, and dont worry, the hay wont cause suffocation if it falls on you or the animals but it does take a little while to climb out. Make sure you dont leave your hay out in the rain, the wet deteriorates the hay and it falls apart slowly.

Sparse grass is only created when an animal eats a grass block, it turns back into grass faster than dirt and can also spread to near by dirt blocks. Its also consumable by animals helping to prevent dirt blocks just a little longer (unless you have pigs).

We’ve also added perches for chickens called Posts. When it gets dark chickens will attempt to perch on one for sleep, but minecraft chickens are bad flyers so they will need some help climbing up. They come in all shades of vanilla wood and are crafted with three matching slabs placed in a horizontal or vertical line.

Because chicken eggs are laid in 14 colours we added an egg carton container to hold them. Egg cartons are made from 2 paper and will hold up to 16 eggs even when in your inventory. We are working on adding more features to them so you can use it in your inventory similarly to a stack of eggs. They do everything a shulker box can do but only hold eggs, useful for farming automations.
