Note: This page was written for OTG 1.12.2. For 1.16.x, OTG has a new (self-explanatory) world creation GUI. Most commands on this page also exist for 1.16.x, though some of the names/arguments have changed. Documentation for 1.16.x commands does not yet exist, use /otg help, auto-complete or ask on Discord.
Using the OTG World Creation GUI [ ]
This section is written for OTG v8 and above, and is a summary. For more info, or for earlier versions of OTG, see: World Creation GUI
Worlds and dimensions can be created, edited and deleted using the world creation GUI. Press «O» to open the GUI in-game. Creating/editing/deleting dimensions is also possible during the game, no server restarts are required.
When first making a world, you can either press «Create New World» or «Create OTG World». If you create a vanilla world, you can use the GUI in-game to create OTG dimensions you can teleport to. This is useful if you have other mods that need a vanilla overworld, and want to use these worlds alongside OTG.
If making an OTG world, you need to select an installed preset, or make your own preset by pressing «New». Making your own preset can be a lot of work, but is very rewarding. There will eventually be an in-depth tutorial added to the wiki, but for now go to the Discord server for help.
If you’ve selected a preset, you will then be presented with the Dimension Creation screen. This lets you change world settings, like game rules, seed, player game mode, etc. On the left you can add more dimensions to the world, which you can access through portals.
Once in the game, in order to use the menu you need to be OPed on a server, or have cheats enabled in single player. If you created the world and didn’t enable cheats, you can temporarily enable them by using the «Open to LAN» feature. You can change most of the settings from within the game.
Using the map pre-generator [ ]
OTG contains a built in map pre-generator which allows you to generate chunks in a radius around spawn, eliminating world generation related lag. It’s recommended that you pre-generate while not actively playing as running the pregenerator is intensive especially at high speeds (check OTG.ini for speed settings).
For OTG v7 and above, the pregenerator is started by setting a radius in the ‘O’ menu. To stop it, set the radius to 0 chunks.

Teleports the player to the specified dimension or biome.

Exports a WorldEdit section to a BO3 (or BO4) file with a given name.
Sends any ModData() tags in BO3’s within the specified radius in chunks to the specified mod. Some OTG mob spawning commands can be used this way. Be sure to set up ModData() tags in your BO3 to make this work.
Generate a square biome and temperature map in the server’s root of the specified world. It has the following optional arguments:
Output ratio is 1 pixel to 4×4 blocks, like a FromImage input map. If you use /otg map in a FromImage world, it will write part of the same map you used as input, where possible.
Without flags, shows the name and id of the dimension the player is currently in.
The -c flag creates a new dimension with the specified name using a specified installed preset.
The -d flag deletes the dimension with the specified preset. Must be unloaded, which happens automatically when no players are inside.
Sets the pre-generation radius for the player’s current world to chunks in a given dimension. If no dimension given, assumes current. To disable the pregenerator, run the command again with a radius of 0 chunks.
Installing OTG

OTG can be installed both as a Spigot plugin and as a Forge mod. As a Forge mod, players are required to have the mod installed client-side. The Spigot plugin does not require the single player mod to be installed, however certain features (foliage/grass/sky/fog colours & biome names in F3 menu) will not function properly for custom biomes.
Below is an outline of the different methods of installation for the various platforms, be aware that without installing a world preset OTG will replace the overworld with an approximation of vanilla worldgen and the configs OTG driving that in mods(or plugins)/openterraingenerator/worlds.

Note: OTG usually requires 2gb+ memory to be assigned to Minecraft (depending on world preset). If you experience long/never ending world loading times, increase memory allocation.
Forge Server [ ]
If you have already generated any chunks with vanilla or other world settings, delete the level.dat and region files of your main world to get one with the correct level type.

Although clients do not require Forge or OTG installed when joining a Spigot server running OTG, it is recommended that clients do install them if the world preset in use makes heavy use of custom foliage, grass or sky colours.

Versions & Platforms [ ]
The newest releases of OTG are available only for Minecraft 1.12.2, both for Spigot and Forge. Older versions are available for 1.10.2 and 1.11.2.
Mod Compatibility [ ]
Open Terrain Generator works well alongside most other mods and has Forge Biome Dictionary integration to help with modded resource placement, as well as mob spawning rule inheritance to allow biome creators to apply automatic compatibility with mods which spawn mobs on a per biome basis. There are some exceptions, of course. Below are a list of mods that are known to cause incompatibilities or other problems:
There are other mods that can cause issues if added after the world is created, mostly mods that add new biomes. This can crash the game in v8, and can lead to unintended behaviours in v9. It’s strongly advised to not add any mods post world creation.
Sponge Server [ ]
OTG does not officially support Sponge. The mod is not tested with Sponge, nor does OTG interact directly with the Sponge API. That being said, newer versions of OTG should work with Sponge.
If you’re running Sponge alongside a permissions plugin (like LuckPerms), then you should be extra careful which version of OTG you use. OTG v9 contains a vital fix for permissions for Sponge, and using any version below v9 opens your world up to serious damage from players. OTG v9 adds the following permissions for Sponge servers:

Note: Both servers and clients running OTG will require more memory than vanilla Minecraft. If you are experiencing long/endless world loading times or other performance issues it is recommended you increase Minecraft’s allocated memory to 2gb+.
Installing World Presets (1.16.x) [ ]
Presets are being updated for 1.16.x and will be available on CurseForge as soon as possible. In the mean time, 1.12.2 presets can be used with OTG 1.16.x.
Using 1.12.2 presets with OTG 1.16.x [ ]
This way, 1.12.2 presets can be used with OTG 1.16.5, however presets will need to be updated to make use of all the new features.
Note: When using 1.12.2 presets with OTG 1.16.5, some mods don’t work due to missing biome categories or biome dictionary tags in OTG biomes, configured via the BiomeConfig (.bc) files. Ice and Fire requires the «overworld» tag for example, which is not configured for 1.12.2 OTG presets. Presets are being updated and will be released on CurseForge a.s.a.p, users can also manually add categories/tags to BiomeConfig (.bc) files (BiomeCategory:, BiomeDictTags:).

Now go to the server.properties file and ensure that level-name is set to the world you’re using (for instance, «Biome Bundle» without the quotes). Note: If your spigot server uses a web control panel like McMyAdmin or similar, you may have to specify level-name there instead of in server.properties
Add the following to your bukkit.yml to enable Open Terrain Generator and (for example) Biome Bundle for the default world (copy and paste this to get the correct leading spaces):
In the above example Biome Bundle can be replaced with any other preset/world name matching any folder in the OpenTerrainGenerator/worlds folder.

If no world preset is installed, when generating a world OTG will generate a set of configs that approximate ‘vanilla’ Minecraft world generation in the /OpenTerrainGenerator/worlds folder (found in either the /mods or /plugins folder depending on platform).
Note: In Single Player (Forge) you can click the ‘New’ button to the right of ‘Clone’ in the world creation GUI to create a set of default configs without affecting any other installed presets.

What is OTGEdit? [ ]
OTGEdit is a graphical user interface for Open Terrain Generator (OTG), TerrainControl (TC) and Minecraft Worlds (MCW). OTGEdit can be used to create, import, edit and generate worlds. OTGEdit can also convert schematic files to BO3’s. OTGEdit is a WinForms app and works for Windows only. If you’re a Java coder who would like to port OTGEdit to Java, please let us know!
Introduction to terrain generation via OTG / TC / MCW
OTG, TC and MCW allow users to customise world generation via text files. Each world has a WorldConfig.ini file with global settings, a set of BiomeConfig (.bc) files and a set of BO2 and BO3 files for custom objects like trees, rocks, structures etc. These files can be edited via a text editor and copied/renamed/moved to create and edit worlds. OTGEdit makes this easier with a UI for quick editing and world management, so you don’t have to use a text editor or manage files manually.

OTGEdit uses a world template as a base for every world that you create. The world template contains a WorldConfig.ini, a set of BiomeConfig files and a set of BO2/BO3 files. OTGEdit uses the WorldConfig and BiomeConfig files as default values when you’re editing the world, it also grabs the comments for settings from these files. You can create a new world template in OTGEdit or import an existing world as a world template so you can start editing it.
Editing World and Biome settings [ ]
Changing settings on the world and biomes settings tabs is straight forward. Use the input fields to change the values, you can hover the mouse over setting names to show tooltips with instructions. You can use the search box on the top right to search for specific settings. For list-inputs use CTRL + Click and SHIFT + Click to select specific items, you can copy/paste (CTRL+C / CTRL+V) lists of biomes and resources, just make sure the list has focus.
Biome groups (Biome settings tab)
Changing settings on the biome settings tab is different than for world settings. You can create groups of biomes that change only specific settings, biomes can be attached to any number of biome groups. Biome groups are processed from top to bottom and can override or merge each other’s values. For example, you could create a «WaterSetttings» group that only applies water level and river settings to all your biomes. You could also have an «Ores» group that applies ore settings to all your biomes at once. You could then make specific groups such as «MountainOres» and «UnderwaterOres» that add or override specific ores from the «Ores» group for specific biomes only. Via this merging mechanic you can define global settings for all biomes in one group and then override parts of those settings for specific biomes in another group. This makes it much easier to change specific settings for a whole group of biomes at once.
Some settings have their own «merge option», namely biome lists and resource queues (used for ores, trees, plants, rocks, lakes etc). The merging behaviours for the ResourceQueue setting are explained in its tooltip (hover your mouse over the settings name on the biome settings tab).

Packaging worlds using WorldPacker [ ]
When you’re done with your world pack you can package it as a mod just like Biome Bundle so that it automatically copies the world files to the right place when MC start. You can use the WorldPacker java project to package your world pack as a mod. This requires some very basic programming skills. BO2’s and BO3’s (custom objects/structures) [ ]
OpenTerrainGenerator, TerrainControl and MCW use BO2 and BO3 files to add custom structures to the world such as trees, rocks and building. BO2’s and BO3’s can be placed as either CustomObjects ( Terminology [ ]
— «World pack»: A directory that contains all the files needed for the world; the WorldConfig.ini, the WorldBiomes folder with the biome configs and the WorldObjects folder with the BO2’s and BO3’s. Users can copy a world pack directly to their /OpenTerrainGenerator/worlds/ folder and generate the world.
— «WorldConfig», the WorldConfig.ini file in the root folder of a world. Contains the global settings for the world.
— «World pack creator»: Someone who designs their own worlds for OTG/TC/MCW and packages them as a world pack that people can download and play. These people are the target audience for OTGEdit.
